What is a cataract and what are its first signs?
What are the main things to know?
- A cataract is clouding of the lens: vision becomes dim and blurred
- Sensitivity to light appears, along with halos around lights at night
- Today the surgery is minimally invasive and the restrictions after it are minimal
- I give the consultation, the diagnosis and the management before and after surgery; I do not perform the surgery itself
How do you recognise a cataract?
- Gradual dimming and blurring of vision
- Colours seem less bright than before
- Halos around sources of light after dark
- Worse night vision, driving at night becomes harder
Why does a cataract develop?
The most common cause is age-related changes in the protein of the lens, which gradually make it lose its transparency. Less often a cataract is linked to an injury, to certain diseases or to long-term use of particular medicines.
When should you see an ophthalmologist about a cataract?
If your vision is gradually becoming dim, if you have become more sensitive to light, or if you notice that at night it has become harder to see because of bright headlights and street lamps.
How can I help with a cataract?
I diagnose cataract, advise on the timing of surgery and on the preparation for it, follow the patient before the procedure and manage the recovery after it. Cataract removal surgery at the clinic where I see patients is performed by other doctors. Separately from that, I carry out laser treatment of secondary cataract - clouding of the posterior capsule of the lens, which is not removed during cataract surgery and, unfortunately, becomes cloudy in some patients because of metabolic disorders in the body.
