Diagnosis and treatment
What is dry eye disease and why do drops not always help?
What are the main things to know?
- Burning, a feeling of sand in the eyes and tiredness from the screen are the typical signs of dry eye
- The most common cause is meibomian gland dysfunction, not simply a lack of tears
- Drops relieve the symptom but do not remove the cause
- I treat it with IPL therapy on the Envision by InMode platform, handpieces Lumecca-I and Forma-I
How do you recognise dry eye disease?
- Burning, a feeling of sand or of a foreign body in the eyes
- Eyes tire quickly when working at a screen
- Redness and occasional watering as a reaction to drying out
- Blurred vision that clears after blinking
Why does dry eye disease develop?
The most common cause is dysfunction of the meibomian glands of the eyelid, because of which the tear film lacks its lipid layer and evaporates quickly. Long hours at a screen, air conditioning and age only make this process stronger.
When should you see an ophthalmologist about dry eye disease?
If drops for dry eye last for shorter and shorter periods, or if the symptoms come back as soon as you stop using them. That is a sign that the cause has still not been removed.
How can I help with dry eye disease?
I determine the cause of the dry eye during the diagnostic examination and treat it with IPL therapy on the Envision by InMode platform, handpieces Lumecca-I and Forma-I - this works with meibomian gland dysfunction itself, and not only relieves the symptom.
What does this page not cover?
Using drops for a month or two and “curing” dry eye that way will not work, and this is the most common misconception patients have. Without removing the cause the symptoms come back again.
Questions patients ask most often
What do patients ask most often?
How many IPL sessions are needed for dry eye?
The number of sessions depends on the state of the meibomian glands and is determined during the diagnostic examination. I draw up a detailed treatment plan individually at the consultation.
Why do ordinary lubricating drops not help for good?
Because the most common cause of dry eye is not a lack of tears but dysfunction of the glands of the eyelid. Drops relieve the sensation for a while but do not restore the work of the glands, and a device-based therapy is what is needed for that.
