What is myopia and can its progression be stopped?
What are the main things to know?
- Myopia (short-sightedness) - objects in the distance look blurred, close up everything is sharp
- It often progresses at school age and with long hours in front of a screen
- It is corrected with glasses, contact lenses or overnight orthokeratology lenses; if you are considering laser correction, I manage you before and after it
- I provide consultation, diagnosis and the selection of correction.
How do you recognise myopia?
- A blurred image of objects at a distance
- Squinting in order to make out distant objects better
- Tired eyes and headache after long periods of looking into the distance
- In children - moving closer to the screen or the book while reading
Why does myopia develop?
The most common cause is elongation of the eyeball, so that the image is focused in front of the retina instead of on it. The tendency is often inherited, and the progression is driven by long hours of near work and by less time spent outdoors, especially in school-age children.
When should you see an ophthalmologist about myopia?
If distance vision has become worse, if glasses or contact lenses no longer give you the picture quality you had before, or if you have noticed that you squint more often. Regular check-ups matter even without complaints: in children and teenagers myopia can progress unnoticed.
How can I help with myopia?
I examine and diagnose refractive errors, select vision correction - glasses or contact lenses - and give consultations before and after laser vision correction if a patient is considering it.

Can myopia be cured without surgery?
Myopia cannot be removed completely without surgical or laser treatment, but vision can be corrected and the progression can be kept under control. At the consultation I select the best correction and explain what slows the progression down.
Do you perform laser vision correction?
No, the surgery itself is performed by a surgeon. I give the consultation before the procedure and the follow-up after it, so my assessment does not depend on whether you agree to the surgery.
